1. Donor Advised Funds: The Canadian landscape, myths and reality

Education Level: General

Donor-advised funds are increasingly popular and are now offered by a wide-range of public foundations in Canada. However, there is still significant confusion about what a DAF is and what the benefits and restrictions of DAFs are. This session will provide a current snapshot of the landscape in Canada, based on the most recent report on DAFs from Investor Economics, and address some of the most common myths about DAFs. For more information on the Investor Economics report Donor-advised Funds. New Opportunities for Charities and Wealth Managers, please contact Keith Sjogren at keith.sjogren@issmarketintelligence.com.

2. Designating a Charity as Beneficiary – Tips and Traps for Gifts from Registered Plans

Education Level: Intermediate

In this session, participants will learn everything they need to know about designating a charity as beneficiaries of a registered plan – including a registered retirement savings plan, a registered retirement income fund, and a tax-free savings account.

3. Discovery Meetings: Get Out From Behind Your Desk and Uncover Prospects and Planned Gifts

Education Level: General

For front line fundraisers, the most impactful action we can take is to meet with our donors face-to-face. Yet unfortunately, securing meetings with donors often falls to the bottom of our to-do list.

Join Eli Clarke from the University of Toronto, to learn how he met with over 180 donors in one year. Together, we will explore how to get out from behind your desk and meet with your donors face-to-face by focusing on:

  •     Prioritizing donor contact
  •     Quickly identifying prospects
  •     Contacting, following up, and securing meetings
  •     Preparing for meetings
  •     Leading and having meaningful conversations

4. Flexibility in Endowment Strategy

Education Level: Experienced

As the charitable sector strives to ‘build back better’, endowments are a long standing strategy that can help the charitable sector respond post-crisis with more flexibility. This presentation will discuss the different approaches to endowments today as well as best practices for ensuring that the charity and the donor are on the same page when it comes to the endowment terms. Although endowments are often started for a ‘rainy day’, when it started raining in 2020, many charities found themselves in situations where the terms of past endowments were unclear and inflexible. We will provide examples of such situations and possible solutions in discussing how charities are indeed building back better to empower endowments that are as impactful and flexible as they need to be.

5. A Collaborative and Practical Approach: How RBC Integrates Philanthropic Planning into a Holistic Financial Plan

Education Level: Experienced

Strategic philanthropic planning can, and should, be a part of an integrated financial plan. In this presentation, we will discuss how RBC takes a holistic approach to planning which may involve several different parts of the bank, including Investment professionals, Wealth Management, Insurance, Estate and Trust Services; and potentially allied external professionals as well.  This approach places the client at the centre of strategy, ensuring that experts from a number of different areas are introduced to provide the client with the most effective solutions, including strategic philanthropic advice.
