In particular, the gifting of a life insurance policy can be an attractive option for clients as prospective donors. It’s also an important strategic charitable giving tool. A panel discussion by CAGP’s Government Relations Committee – Unpacking Budget 2022

April’s federal budget tabled by the Liberal government was a plan to grow the economy and make life more affordable, and charities were also meaningfully included. Two measures are particularly relevant for CAGP: a proposal to boost charitable spending by increasing the disbursement quota; and a plan to strengthen partnerships in the sector by facilitating disbursements to non-qualifying donees. In this plenary sessions a panel from CAGP’s Government Relations Committee will discuss these proposals, and their intended and expected impact for Canada’s charities and for strategic charitable giving.

Do the decision-makers at your organization still think of legacy fundraising as a “nice to have – but not urgent”? Here’s what they should know: in a nutshell, your best groups of donors (Matures and Boomers) are passing on. These donors have been the engine room of annual, mid-level and major gifts programs, and nobody is sure yet whether the younger generations will fully replace them. That means – unless you secure gifts in these donors Wills – you’ll soon have a huge gap in your annual program. And be sure – if you’re not marketing legacies to your donors – other charities are.

6.4. Impact Investing by Charities: The New Frontier in Philanthropy

More and more donors, as well as charities, are wanting to become involved in “impact investing” as part of the new frontier in philanthropy, but do not always understand what it involves. This session will explain what impact investing is intended to achieve through the dual purpose of achieving a financial return and charitable purpose. It will also explain how supply side impact investing differs from demand side impact investing, what forms impacting investing can take to achieve the charitable purposes of the charity, as well as the philanthropic intent of the donor. 6.5. Building the Designation for Professional Philanthropic Advisors

When COVID-19 hit in spring 2019, CAGP led the charge in “pivoting” to a virtual Annual General Meeting to ensure we could continue to connect with our members and conduct official business. The 2021 National Conference on Strategic Philanthropy explored the need for a path to CAGP’s vision of a better world through strategic charitable giving that is fairer, more just and inclusive. The response was a resounding: yes – now!

4. Flexibility in Endowment Strategy

As the charitable sector strives to ‘build back better’, endowments are a long standing strategy that can help the charitable sector respond post-crisis with more flexibility. This presentation will discuss the different approaches to endowments today as well as best practices for ensuring that the charity and the donor are on the same page when it comes to the endowment terms. Although endowments are often started for a ‘rainy day’, when it started raining in 2020, many charities found themselves in situations where the terms of past endowments were unclear and inflexible. We will provide examples of such situations and possible solutions in discussing how charities are indeed building back better to empower endowments that are as impactful and flexible as they need to be.

5. A Collaborative and Practical Approach: How RBC Integrates Philanthropic Planning into a Holistic Financial Plan

In 2021 more fundraisers are making blended asks, talking about gift planning and major gifts together. Much of our CAGP curriculum focuses on the gift vehicles; understanding them, accepting, receipting and stewarding these donations as well as marketing.
