1.1 The Giving Brain: The Art and Science of Legacy Giving (Masterclass Part 1)

Topic Stream: Marketing and Communications

Education level: Intermediate

Thanks to brain imaging technology and the explosion of neuroscience, we know eight times more about how the human brain actually works than we did just 30 years ago. And you know what? A lot of planned giving best practice runs contrary to how donors actually think, feel and decide.

This session offers you the chance to acquire the most up-to-date knowledge available about why people make legacy gifts – and more importantly, how you can persuade them to do so!

09 h 15 – 10 h 45

1.2 Let’s Be Honest – What We Can and Can’t Control As Gift Planners

Topic Stream: Building Relationships

Education level: General

Let’s be honest, taxes, gift vehicles, and recognition do not inspire planned gifts. Why do we talk about them so much? Most donors will never tell us they have left a bequest. Why do we spend so much time and effort trying to get them to confirm their gifts?

Join Jenny Mitchell and Eli Clarke in a safe space for an honest and open workshop to identify the psychology behind why we focus on counterproductive work, how we can stop doing it, and practical solutions and strategies to focus our work based on value and impact.

1.4 Navigating the Line Between Donor-centricity and White Saviourism

Topic Stream: Marketing & Communications, Ethics & Judgement

Education level: Intermediate

Legacy donors are amazing, altruistic people who really live their values. But no one individual can save the world.
So how do we let donors know how much they are loved and appreciated, and how much impact they can have, without casting them as “saviour” and the organization and their beneficiaries as those it is necessary to “save”?
Is it possible to achieve the tried-and-true results of donor-centricity without this divide?
We say, yes!

Join this session to explore donor-centricity, community-centred fundraising, philanthropic psychology, and the relationships between them; and learn how to create messaging that brings it all together.

1.6 Endowments: Barriers to Addressing the Challenges of Today

Topic Stream: Legal Issues, Ethics & Judgement

Education level: General

The number of private foundations and their assets have significantly grown over the past ten years, but the flow of funds to Canada’s most vulnerable communities has remained relatively unchanged. Most foundations are legally structured to operate in perpetuity, making the sector ‘asset rich’ and ‘cash poor’. Wealth inequality is rapidly growing, tax deducted resources are entering the sector, yet it is nearly impossible for nonprofits to address the social and economic challenges facing Canadians today.

Approximately $1 trillion in personal wealth will be transferred from one generation to the next in Canada between now and 2026 and nonprofit leaders are asking donors to rethink perpetual endowments.

Canada’s charitable tax credit regime provides great opportunities for clients to optimize their tax and estate plan. Clients can receive a charitable tax credit and feel good about helping the charities of their choice. Using life insurance for planned giving can help clients make a more substantial donation that is in alignment with their estate planning goals.

In particular, the gifting of a life insurance policy can be an attractive option for clients as prospective donors. It’s also an important strategic charitable giving tool. In this presentation, we are going to outline five planned giving opportunities with life insurance.

4.1 Legacy Marketing 101 – Build it and They will Come

Topic Stream: Marketing & Communications

Education level: Introductory

Do the decision-makers at your organization still think of legacy fundraising as a “nice to have – but not urgent”? Here’s what they should know: in a nutshell, your best groups of donors (Matures and Boomers) are passing on. These donors have been the engine room of annual, mid-level and major gifts programs, and nobody is sure yet whether the younger generations will fully replace them. That means – unless you secure gifts in these donors Wills – you’ll soon have a huge gap in your annual program. And be sure – if you’re not marketing legacies to your donors – other charities are.

FRANC parler 2022, qui se tiendront en anglais : A Reimagined Future of Philanthropy – Are we courageous enough for transformative change?

7.3 Building Sustainability by Breaking down Silos: Re-thinking fundraising through a radical re-focus on the retention of major, annual and legacy donors

Topic Stream: Building Relationships

Education Level: General

Our long term sustainability as non-profit organizations is under threat. Individual giving is declining and loyal giving is being eroded, which is bad news for gift planning. The best way to secure, grow and sustain philanthropic support has far more to do with being true to current donors than acquiring new ones. It’s time to get real about breaking down the silos between annual, major and legacy giving. Donor retention can only be strengthened if development programs make building authentic relationship with stakeholders their single most important objective. We’ll discuss how current concepts of donor-centrism, moves management and metrics need to evolve, and propose long term solutions to this major challenge.

Topic Stream: Building Relationships, Marketing & Communications

Education Level: General

Legacy challenge programs have been more prominent over the last few years, with impressive results across a wide array of non-profit organizations. These programs are effective because they meet a variety of donor needs and offer incentives that stimulate donor actions. This session will share strategies and learnings from a large multifaceted university, McGill University, and a major cultural institution, The National Ballet of Canada. The speakers will describe how Legacy Challenges can be effective in meeting multiple fundraising goals and strategies in a variety of settings. These include revitalizing a legacy giving program, galvanizing donor participation, increasing the average size of legacy gift commitments, unearthing existing legacy donors, and more.

8.1 Bequests are Just the Beginning: Why Bequest Intentions are a Starting Point to a Beautiful Friendship

Topic Stream: Gift Planning Vehicles

Education level: Intermediate

Receiving a bequest intention is sometimes viewed as the mountaintop gift. A bequest to charity means the donor loves you as much as their other loved ones, perhaps more, and is an invitation to deepen the relationship!
The donor conversation about future gifts can quickly change to a conversation about lifetime giving as well. Most donors would choose to “give with a warm hand” if that option exists. Donors may explore whether they can increase lifetime donations or consider donations of assets. This session will also include suggestions to start the donor conversation and the opportunity to practice those conversations.

8.3 Barriers to Giving: Donors and Gift Planning

Track: Building Relationships

Education level: General

Many donors struggle with the concept and process of gift planning. This interactive session identifies five barriers to giving – both from the perspective of the donor and the charity. The five barriers to “giving up” are: 1) the endowment effect; 2) cultural assumptions; 3) planning support; 4) complexity; and 5) emotions. Together we’ll explore how these issues inhibit gift planning and identify how gift planners can anticipate their influence and increase success.

8.4 Flow Through Shares Made Easy: How to Take Major Donors to the Next Level

Topic Stream: Gift Planning Vehicles

Education level: General, Intermediate

In recent years, odds are you have heard about flow-through shares and how they can help major donors give up to three times more, at no additional cost. But how comfortable do you feel speaking about it with your donors?

While Philanthropic Tax Planning has become a common, trusted method of giving for Canada’s largest donors, it still remains a mystery for many professional fundraisers. And yet, since 2006, this strategy has created more than a $1 billion in donations for Canadian registered charities.

In this engaging, accessible talk, Peter Nicholson, President & Founder of the Foundation WCPD, will break down the basics of flow-through shares, how they work, why they exist and the tax policies that make this uniquely Canadian structure possible.

By the end, you will not only have a greater understanding of flow-through shares, but also a toolkit for how to approach your major donors in the field.

8.6 The Power of Legacy Videos

Topic Stream: Marketing & Communications

Education level: General

Research has demonstrated that the most effective way to inspire a donor to include a charity in their Will is to share stories of existing donors who have already done so. Couple that with the fact that video is not only the most powerful storytelling medium on the planet, but today, more accessible than ever before and we have a new, exciting, and highly effective means of inspiring legacy giving. Video storytelling is the future of Philanthrophy and the future is here.
